Complementing the Archive is Zeffirelli’s personal library, a collection of 10,000 volumes of art, history, literature, theatre and costume that boasts rare editions, periodicals and monographs dedicated to the principal names in acting, music and conducting, both Italian and international.
The Archive and Library, together with the Museum, constitute the core of The Franco Zeffirelli International Centre for the Performing Arts’ activities.
In conjunction with the artistic and cultural patrimony that Franco Zeffirelli has made available to the public and to scholars, comparisons and connections can be established with the technical and visual developments of theatre, opera and cinema from the 20th century to the present day, with a focus on the evolution of stagecraft and “recitar cantando,” which can be traced back to Renaissance Florentine with the Camerata de’ Bardi.
