“I have always loved the Renaissance. For me, painting took off with Masaccio’s Expulsion from the Garden of Eden. […] I learned about a central plan for visual ideas from the architecture of Brunelleschi and Leon Battista Alberti. In my works, there is always a central axis; there is an obsession with the central line of the stage. The line you should refer to is the axis from which everything begins and on which the scenery’s construction is organized. It’s a reference that isn’t just pictorial; it is without limits, without definition, but full of emotion. The emotion overlaps with the technical structure of the set design and with the entire human world that moves within it: passions, emotions, collective expressions, colours, the period, great inspirations, but always beginning with in the mind with a very precise geometric setting.”
Beginning with this “central axis,” which summarizes the multifaceted work of a life dedicated to the world of theatre and cinema, Franco Zeffirelli considered the future, the continuation of the art and the “craft” of set design, and professional training for young students who aspire to undertake this adventure of theatre and a life with a firm traditional base, never forgetting the masters of the past that made this artistic discipline great, rendering it topical in every era.
Looking towards “today” and tomorrow, towards the future, for continually new mise-en-scène.
The Franco Zeffirelli International Centre for the Performing Arts was established according to these objectives, located in the headquarters of the non-profit Fondazione Franco Zeffirelli, an initiative longed for by the Maestro, who, aiming for a strongly didactic and pedagogical component, donated to his city and to future generations his personal archive containing all the graphic and bibliographic documentation of his work, to settle a debit of gratitude towards a culture and a tradition that identifies with the artistic and cultural history of Florence.
The Fondazione Franco Zeffirelli launches its educational activities with the four-month Masterclass and Training Course in Theatre Set Design, highlighting the creative spirit of Franco Zeffirelli that has always guided him in the conception and composition of his set designs for theatre and cinema.
The Course of Advanced Theatrical training for Opera Singers refers to young opera singers who wish to improve the art of acting on stage and receive new incentive that may compensate the sometimes rigid schematism imposed upon them by the study in-depth of the bel canto techniques.
