From Drawing to Installation Art
Omar Galliani, internationally renowned artist, will be holding a master class From Drawing to Installation Art, which will be divided into two indivisible modules lasting 16 hours each. The master class will be coinciding with the presentation of his site-specific installation Un’opera per Zeffirelli, within the Music Hall of San Firenze Monumental Complex, seat of Franco Zeffirelli Foundation, on the occasion of the centennial from the birth of the famous director and set designer.
Starting from the so called “primacy of drawing,” an artistic legacy of the great Italian Renaissance tradition, participants will be guided through the different steps from the initial conception to the design of a contemporary installation-artwork; in which the viewer, immersed into the modified space, becomes an integral part of the artwork itself by his or her interaction with it.
During the first weekend, students will also have the extraordinary opportunity to be involved in the assemblage of Omar Galliani’s installation-artwork inside the late Baroque architecture of the Music Hall of San Firenze.
This master class, far beyond a simple art class, is an opportunity to improve and perfect one’s artistic skills within a very special context.
The Masterclass is addressed to
The master class is addressed to teachers, graduates and students of Art Academies and Schools of Arts and of the different fields of visual arts and architecture, interested in deepening their technical knowledge and means of expression through an exchange with a major master; and to all those who, having studied humanities, desire to enrich their knowledge and experience in the fields of contemporary art history and curatorship.
When and How
Maestro Omar Galliani’s master class From Drawing to Installation Art will be in two indivisible modules lasting 16 hours each over two weekends (Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday). The first one is from October 27 to October 29 and is coinciding with the end of the setting and the vernissage of the installation-artwork An Opera for Franco Zeffirelli dedicated by Omar Galliani to the occasion of the centenary of Franco Zeffirelli’s birth. The second one is from November 24 to November 26; both of them will be at the seat of Franco Zeffirelli Foundation, Piazza San Firenze, 5 in Florence.
The modules will have the following schedule:
- Friday, October 27, 2023 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m
- Saturday, October 28, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m
- Sunday, October 29, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m
During the interval between the two different modules, participants will be able to think and work out their own projects that will be perfected on the second weekend under the guidance of Omar Galliani.
- Friday, November 24, 2023 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m
- Saturday, November 25, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Sunday, November 26, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m
The master class will be conducted in Italian language.
At the end of the master class, participants will be issued a certificate of attendance.
The Program
The master class is structured in two parts:
- Considerations on the different specificities of drawing and installation art;
- Exploitation of a work of the past through contemporary art: that is, the multiple possibilities of placing a work of the past in a contemporary context, creating a frame that takes into account history, meaning and poetics of that work, by using modern technical and expressive means to highlight its cultural and aesthetic significance;
- Considerations on the contribution made by Franco Zeffirelli, director and set designer, to twentieth-century art and culture and participation at the opening of Omar Galliani’s installation-artwork dedicated to him;
- Recognition and production of two or three subjects to be developed as a contemporary installation-artwork inspired by the past, or by choice, design of an original site-specific work, to be placed in an existing urban or museum context.
In the period between the two different modules, participants will be able to think about and develop their own projects, which will be refined in the second weekend through exposition and discussion on the following topics:
- Reflections about the many ways an artwork can be included in the social dimension creating a “set design” that expresses the author’s sensibility while taking into account the environmental context; as well as the survival of the work within the everyday life;
- Analysis of the technical and expressive components of an installation-artwork, including light, color, and sound;
- Design and execution of a final project with the study of a possible placement within an exhibition venue or in the urban context;
- Discussion and evaluation of the final project expressed by the participants, to be presented to various cultural and institutional stakeholders for its actual promotion and realization.
